Built for people going through divorce —
not lawyers who already understand it.
Most divorce financial calculators are built by attorneys for attorneys. Know Your Half was built for the person sitting in a parking lot after a hard conversation, trying to understand what their financial life looks like on the other side.
Why we built this
Going through a divorce is one of the most financially complex events in a person's life — and one of the most emotionally overwhelming. Understanding terms like "spousal support," "QDRO," "coverture fraction," and "equitable distribution" shouldn't require a law degree.
Know Your Half was created to bridge that gap. To give anyone — regardless of legal knowledge or financial background — a clear, honest, plain-English picture of what their divorce might look like financially before they walk into a lawyer's office.
Because when you understand your own numbers, you show up to that meeting prepared instead of overwhelmed. And prepared costs less.
What the calculator covers
How it works
- Answer a few plain questions — no jargon, no legal terms without explanation
- Watch your financial picture build in real time as you answer
- See your complete estimate with the inputs that produced each number
- Save or print your results to bring to your attorney meeting
- Adjust your numbers and run different scenarios as many times as you need
What we use your data for
Nothing personal. All financial inputs you enter are processed entirely within your browser — we never see, store, or transmit your income figures, asset values, or any other personal information. Anonymous usage data (like which questions users reach) is collected via Google Analytics to help us improve the tool.
The formulas behind the estimates
- Alimony — AAML (American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers) guideline formula: 30% of payor's gross income minus 20% of recipient's gross income
- Child support — Income Shares Model approximation, the statutory formula in 41 states
- Home equity — Market value minus mortgage balance, divided by state property rules
- Retirement — Coverture fraction: months married ÷ total months in plan, the standard used in QDRO calculations
